UNISON, the largest Trade Union for health and social care workers in Northern Ireland, will be holding a demonstration today at Quality Care Offices in Belfast to call on the company to provide their homecare workers with better terms and conditions of employment and to meet their obligations under minimum wage legislation. The demonstration will commence at 12 noon to 1pm at Quality Care’s Offices, Castlereagh Road, Belfast.

Today NHS workers in England have endorsed a deal which delivers pay adjustments to the NHS wide Agenda for Change agreement.

Anne Speed Head of Bargaining and Representation has now called “for direct engagement with the Department and Employers to discuss steps that must now be taken to close the pay gap for NHS workers here."

Health staff here she said are no longer prepared to remain at the bottom of the pay list.

This documentary tells the story of pregnant women who were diagnosed with fatal foetal abnormality in Irish hospitals. These women travelled aboard for termination because the Irish law denied them this treatment at home. Their group TFMR (Termination for Medical Reasons) are now lobbying to have the law changed.

Today (14th May 2018) the Department of Health has published a new health and social care workforce strategy for Northern Ireland. Responding to the announcement, UNISON Head of Bargaining and Negotiations Anne Speed said:

On Sunday 10 June 2018, women and girls - including those who identify as women and non-binary individuals - will walk together in their tens of thousands through Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh and London. Participants will be given green, white or violet to wear to represent the colours of the suffrage movement.

UNISON today (26th April 2018) welcomes recent media coverage by the BBC of the impact of the menopause on women, which has highlighted the experiences of our own members working within health and social care.  Commenting on the coverage, UNISON Women’s Committee Joint Chair Roberta Magee said:

On Saturday 21st April, activists from UNISON joined the Trade Union Friends of Palestine rally in solidarity with the Great March of Return.

The trade unions representing education workers in Northern Ireland held a protest at the Derry office of the Education Authority to highlight their common concerns over Special Educational Needs provision. The protest was timed to coincide with the monthly board meeting of the EA.  

An employee in the healthcare sector with the support of his trade union, UNISON, has won his case for breach of minimum wage after proceedings were lodged at an Industrial Tribunal in Belfast.
