UNISON Northern Ireland

Open University Student Placements & Strikes

The Open University have released a statement for students ahead of next week’s planned strike action:

As you are fully aware the RCN and UNISON alongside other unions have planned for a number of industrial action days, some of which are strike days.

As you are out on placement during this time, we would ask you to follow all guidance provided to you by your employer, and your mentor.  You will have received advice as a student nurse from your union also.

The Open University would like to advise you that we feel it would be best to not attend placement on the 18th December.  We have discussed this also with your employer.  On the 18th December, we would ask you to take a study or a leave day.

This will be a very busy day for those in practice, and the priority for those in practice will be safe delivery of patient care.

You can return to your practice placement as planned with your mentor from the 19th December until placement finishes.

We would ask you to keep in touch with your mentor and manager in your placement area/team, and show them this communication.  We will endeavour to send this out to your practice area also via the Practice Education teams.

This information will be shared with your practice tutor, and if you have any questions please contact them.
