Health and Social Care Workers deserve the Real Living Wage

UNISON Northern Ireland is campaigning to tackle low pay across our health and social care services. Far too many of our members suffer from persistently low pay, with the value of any pay uplift they receive minimised against increases in the National Living Wage that employers must pay.

UNISON Northern Ireland is determined to see this change through demanding that that the Real Living Wage be set as the minimum standard on pay across health and social care.

The Real Living Wage is calculated based on the real cost of living by the Living Wage Foundation. The Real Living Wage is currently £13.45 per hour and we are pressing for this to be the minimum rate of pay for all health and social care workers employed under Agenda for Change in Northern Ireland.

For workers delivering social care services employed outside of the HSC Trusts, UNISON is calling through the regional Social Care Fair Work Forum for the Real Living Wage to be the minimum rate of pay. These workers are not employed under Agenda for Change pay, terms and conditions, with each employer having responsibility for rates of pay.

Following on from our campaign, the Health Minister has given a commitment to advancing progress to the HSC paying the Real Living Wage. We will hold the Minister to this commitment and want to see the Real Living Wage introduced as soon as possible.
